Two Girls Share Adventures with Rainbow Fairies, Weather Fairies and More!
A couple of years ago, my now 10-year-old daughter discovered “The Rainbow Fairies” early chapter books. Two girls meet each other while on vacation on Rainspell Island and are lucky enough to meet a real, live fairy from Fairyland. What’s more, the fairy needs their help! There are seven stories in all, one fairy for each colour of the rainbow, and after reading the first couple of books, Samantha was insistent on finding the rest of the series at our local library.
Since then, the Weather Fairies were also discovered and each book was read in turn. Although she is now 11 and quite capable of reading longer, more difficult novels, she was thrilled last week to discover the Fun Day Fairies and all seven books of this new series immediately came home from the library with us.
Kirsty and Rachel, the human heroines of these early chapter books share secret adventures with their fairy companions, even travelling to Fairyland on occasion. The stories usually include some intrigue, a problem and a search for someone or something that is needed to restore the particular powers of the fairy who is the subject of the book. Working together, Kirsty, Rachel and the fairy always succeed. These are light-hearted, wholesome stories, with lots of fun and magic. What young girl, even in our techno-world, wouldn’t want to be able to fly with the fairies? Or have a fairy hiding in her pocket as she’s talking to Mom and Dad?! © Helena Long, February, 2009, Children's Book Review of
